[Publication Report] A NAGASAKI Planetary Health Expert Meeting “From COP27 and COP15 to the G7 Hiroshima Summit: New Partnerships for Solving Climate, Environment, Biodiversity and Health Issues” Report (October 3, 2023)

The report of A NAGASAKI Planetary Health Expert Meeting “From COP27 and COP15 to the G7 Hiroshima Summit: New Partnerships for Solving Climate, Environment, Biodiversity and Health Issues” has now been published. The meeting was held on Friday, May 12, 2023 in Hiroshima, Japan, jointly hosted by Health and Global Policy Institute (HGPI) and Nagasaki University.

Domestic and international experts from government, academia, and private industry were invited to share the discussions that took place at the 27th Conference of the Parties (COP27) to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) and the 15th Conference of the Parties (COP15) to the UN Convention on Biological Diversity (UNCBD). Through these discussion, the aim of this meeting was to promote awareness and understanding of the connection between the Earth’s environment, including climate change, and human health and to foster an environment for discussion in preparation for the G7 Nagasaki Ministerial Conference on Health, and for the Hiroshima Summit of the Group of Seven (G7) which was held in the following weeks.

A new “UHC Political Declaration” was adopted at the High-Level Meeting on Universal Health Coverage (UHC) on September 21, 2023, which also addressed planetary health issues. The 28th Conference of the Parties (COP28) to the UNFCCC will be held in Dubai, United Arab Emirates (UAE) from November 30 to December 12, 2023. COP28 will be hosting the first-ever “Health Day” on December 3, when environment and health ministers from around the world will discuss the health impacts of climate change.

Based on the report of this meeting, we hope that efforts will be further deepened by domestic and international stakeholders.

Furthermore, you can watch the discussion on the day in a recording from here.
